Cowboy Tennis Achieves Highest Ranking in Program History
February 28, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's men's tennis team (6-1) climbed to ninth in the latest Fila rankings that were released by the ITA on Tuesday. It is the highest ranking in the program's history.
Despite not playing this past week, the Cowboys were able to rise two spots from their previous No. 11 ranking. The previous highest ranking in the program's history was on March 8, 2005 when they were No. 10.
The Cowboys are coming off an impressive performance at the National Team Indoor Championships earlier this month. Head coach James Wadley's Cowboys notched victories against nationally-ranked Duke and Miami and narrowly lost to host school and No. 7 Illinois, 4-3. All six of the Pokes' wins in 2007 have come against ranked opponents.
The Cowboys' top three singles players, Oleksandr Nedovyesov, Ivan Puchkarov and Daniel Byrnes, were ranked in last week's singles rankings. Puchkarov was the highest ranked player in the Big 12 at No. 16. Nedovyesov and Byrnes came in at 65 and 83, respectively. Byrnes and Nedovyesov also team to form the nation's 36th-ranked doubles tandem.
O-State will next be in action when they travel to La Jolla, Calif., to take part in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship this weekend.
