Cowgirls Roll Jayhawks, 6-1, to Stay Perfect
February 24, 2007 | Cowgirl Tennis
Oklahoma States' 42nd-ranked women's tennis team rolled the Kansas Jayhawks (2-8, 0-2), 6-1, at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla., on Saturday in its Big 12 opener to stay perfect, 4-0, this season.
“The girls played hard and it was a good win for this team,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “There were a lot of close matches. Now we have to get ready to face Oral Roberts on Wednesday.”
The Cowgirls extended their record to 4-0, the programs best start since the 2003 squad started the season 5-0. That was the best start for the Cowgirls under Lubicz-Majewski. That team would go on to win the Big 12 Championship that season.
OSU took an early advantage with wins and No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Yawna Allen and Nataliya Shatkovskaya downed Stephani Smith and Kunigunda Dorn, 8-3, to stay unbeaten on the season. Jennifer Poskitt and Marta Tsivka moved their record to 3-1 with a win, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles against Lauren Hommell and Stephani Svistun.
The Cowgirl seniors got OSU going early in singles play as Jennifer Poskitt and Lauren Simmons registered wins to give O-State a, 3-0, advantage.
Poskitt defeated Smith quickly, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. The senior has now won two straight after losing her first two matches of the season.
Simmons got a much-needed win as she downed Hommell, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles to snap a two-match losing streak.
Junior Iryna Tkachenko continued her impressive start to the 2007 season as she defeated Elizaveta Avdeeva, 6-1, 6-3, at the top spot to clinch the win for the Cowgirls. Tkachenko is now 4-0 this season and has yet to surrender a set.
With the match clinched for OSU, the remaining three matches all would go into a third set tiebreaker. Allen and Shatkovskaya both pulled out third set tiebreakers while Tsivka fell at No. 5 singles. Shatkovskaya is still unbeaten in her first season of college tennis.
Through the first four matches of the season, OSU has only suffered one loss in the top three spots in their lineup as Tkachenko, Allen and Shatkovskaya have combined for a 10-1 record.
The Cowgirls will look to stay unbeaten as they will host Oral Roberts, weather permitting, Wednesday at 2 p.m. in OSU's 2007 home opener.
