February 22, 2007 | Cowgirl Basketball
Behind a strong second half showing, Oklahoma State's women's basketball team knocked off Texas, 64-52, on Wednesday night in front of 4,442 fans inside the Erwin Events Center.
With the win, the Cowgirls (18-9 overall, 6-8 Big 12) picked up their first win in Austin since Feb. 25, 1998 and also swept the season series from the Longhorns (16-12, 5-9) for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign.
OSU was plagued by turnovers in the early going and fell behind 18-10 before rallying to tie the score at 22 apiece on a jumper by freshman Andrea Riley.
Junior Dominique Chism kept the Cowgirls in the game with nine points in the half. However, UT's Carla Cortijo scored the last four points of the period to send the Longhorns into the break up 28-24.
The Longhorns took their biggest lead of the game at 35-29 with 16:43 remaining before OSU used a 20-2 run to build a 17-point advantage.
Riley fueled the run with eight of her game-high 18 points during that stretch. The Dallas, Texas native also added five rebounds, four assists and four steals on the night to continue her late-season surge.
“Sitting next to me is Andrea Riley, and you're looking at the Big 12 Freshman of the Year right here; it's not even close,” Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke said. “I wouldn't trade her for any point guard in this league. She's going to be a force in this league for a long time. She is so important to what we've done all year long and what we want to continue to do.”
The Cowgirls hit 60 percent of their shots in the half, including four of their seven 3-pointer attempts to win their first road game against a Big 12 South Division foe since 2003.
Joining Riley in double figures was senior Rashidat Sadiq, who poured in 17 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, while Chism finished with a a career-high six steals.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Nebraska on Senior Night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
