Legendary Coach Eddie Sutton to be Honored
Oklahoma State University will honor the career of legendary former basketball coach Eddie Sutton during halftime of the Cowboys game against Texas A&M on Wednesday.
The halftime festivities will feature a video tribute to Suttons historic OSU career. Several former players are expected to join Sutton and his wife, Patsy, for the celebration.
Sutton returned to his alma mater in 1990 to take the reins of a program that had only advanced to the NCAA Tournament one time in the prior 25 seasons. Sutton, who played guard at Oklahoma State under the legendary Henry Iba, quickly restored pride in the tradition-rich program as he guided OSU to the Sweet 16 in his first two seasons.
In all, Sutton coached 16 seasons at OSU and guided the Cowboys to 13 NCAA Tournaments. Prior to returning to Stillwater, Sutton coached Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, and became the first coach in NCAA history to led four different schools to the Big Dance. His 798 career victories rank fifth all-time in Division I history.
Coach Eddie Sutton Among Hall of Fame Finalists
Former Oklahoma State basketball head coach Eddie Sutton is one of 15 finalists named for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2007. Sutton was also a finalist in 2002 and 03.
A native of Bucklin, Kan., Sutton was a four-time national Coach of the Year and compiled a 798-315 record in his 36 seasons of coaching at the collegiate level. In his Division I coaching career at four schools, he produced 25 20-win seasons, three 30-win seasons and only one losing season.
Sutton guided both Arkansas (1989) and Oklahoma State (1995, 2004) to the NCAA Final Four and had six Regional Final and 12 Regional Semifinal appearances. An eight-time conference Coach of the Year selection, Sutton led his teams to 26 NCAA appearances in 36 years, won conference championships in the Southwestern, Southeastern, Big Eight and Big 12 Conferences, and was named Coach of the Year in all four leagues.
Sutton was the first coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the NCAA Tournament and is one of just three joining Lefty Driesell and Jim Harrick to have accomplished that feat.
The complete list of 15 finalists includes a total of 10 candidates from the North American Screening Committee players Adrian Dantley and Chris Mullin; coaches Bobby Hurley, Sr., Phil Jackson, Sutton and Roy Williams; contributors Bill Davidson and Dick Vitale; referee Mendy Rudolph and the Texas Western 1966 NCAA Championship team.
The Class of 2007 will be announced on Monday, April 2, at a news conference in Atlanta, Ga., prior to the NCAA mens championship game. A finalist needs 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Class of 2007 will be enshrined during festivities in Springfield, Mass., Sept. 6-8.
Cowboys Lose First Game of Season at Home
Oklahoma State took an early 11-point lead but trailed by 11 with five minutes in the game as the Cowboys dropped their first home game of the season against Missouri 75-64.
The loss broke a 17-game winning streak at home, tied for the seventh-longest streak in school history.
Mario Boggan and JamesOn Curry each scored 16 points while Kenny Cooper added 10 points off the bench.
The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field, including 10-of-18 from beyond the three-point arc.
Against the Aggies
Since the Big 12 formed in 1996-97, OSU is 18-3 vs. the Aggies.
OSU is 11-1 all-time against Texas A&M in Stillwater. That lone loss came on Jan. 24, 1923, when the Aggies handed the Pokes a 24-17 loss in the first game of the series played in Stillwater.
Oklahoma State has lost back-to-back games against Texas A&M for the first time in nearly two decades.
The last time OSU lost two-consecutive games to Texas A&M was 23 games ago when the Cowboys lost in 1972 in Tulsa and nine years later in El Paso.
Even with the two losses, Oklahoma State has won 12 of the last 14 and 20 of the last 23 dating back to 1988.
The Cowboys have failed to reach the mid-century mark in either of the two losses.
Senior forward Mario Boggan is a perfect 15-of-15 from the free-throw line against A&M.
Junior guard JamesOn Curry is 8-of-20 all-time against the Aggies from beyond the three-point arc.
