February 21, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's men's tennis team climbed to No. 11 in the latest ITA/Fila rankings that were released by the ITA on Wednesday. It is the highest the Cowboys (6-1) have been ranked since April 5, 2005, when they were also ranked 11th.
The Pokes are coming off a successful weekend at the ITA/USTA National Men's Indoor Championships in Chicago where they went 2-1. OSU beat then ranked-No. 11 Duke, 4-2, and No. 26 Miami, 4-3. The lone loss came at the hand of No. 7 Illinois, 4-2. It is the only setback the Cowboys have suffered in 2007.
The ITA also released the first singles and doubles rankings since the season has began. Cowboy freshman Oleksandr Nedovyesov broke in the rankings at No. 64. The Alushta, Ukraine, native is 4-3 on the season at the No. 1 position and has three wins against ranked opponents. All three of losses have come against players either currently ranked in the top 10 or players that have been at some point this season.
In doubles, Nedovyesov and teammate Daniel Byrnes came in at No. 36 on Tuesday. The duo is 4-3 at No. 1 doubles and notched a win against Tulsa's 12th-ranked tandem of Diego Camacho and Ross Cunnigham.
The only Cowboy to fall in the rankings was Ivan Puchkarov who dropped from third to 16th. The talented junior is 4-3 this season and is still the highest rated player in the Big 12.
James Wadley's Cowboys will next be in action when they host Oral Roberts at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.
