Cowgirl Basketball Signs Junior College Standout
November 16, 2007 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team has announced the signing of junior college product Tegan Cunningham to a National Letter of Intent.
“Tegan is definitely one of the top five players in the country at the junior college level,” Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke said. “She is a versatile player that can score a lot of different ways and can create her own shot.”
Currently a sophomore at Seward County (Kan.) Community College, Cunningham became just the second freshman in school history to earn first-team NJCAA and WBCA All-America honors after averaging 18.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game a year ago.
A 6-1 wing player, Cunningham broke the school's single-season record for rebounds with 384 and finished second on the single-season points list with 687. The Doncaster, Australia native tied the school's single-game mark for rebounds with 20 against Salt Lake Community College in the NJCAA National Tournament and her 36-point outburst against Barton County Community College is tied for fifth on the school's single-game scoring chart.
A two-time NJCAA Player of the Week honoree, Cunningham scored in double figures in 36 of the Lady Saints' 38 games and finished with 18 double-doubles.
In addition to being named a first-team All-Jayhawk West Conference selection, Cunningham was named the league's freshman of the year and most valuable player after leading the Lady Saints to a 15-1 conference record and their 10th league title in the past 14 years. Overall, the squad posted a 36-2 mark and a third-place finish at the national tournament.
At the regional level, Cunningham was named the Region VI Most Valuable Player as well as the most valuable player of the Region VI Tournament.
Cunningham will join the OSU program for the 2008-09 season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
