January 25, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's 16th-ranked men's tennis team will take on the 47th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., at 11 a.m.
“They are a quality team,” head coach James Wadley. “They had some good individual results from the fall. This will be another challenge for our team and we are looking forward to the match.”
The Cowboys are 2-0 this season after winning the Central Region Qualifier Jan. 19-20 in Tulsa. OSU defeated instate-rivals Tulsa and Oklahoma to win the event and advance on to the UTSA/ITA Men's Team Indoor Championship in Chicago Feb. 16-19.
It will be the second match of the season for ULL. The Ragin' Cajuns face Oral Roberts on Saturday. The two programs have met once before with OSU taking the match, 4-1, in 2002.
The Ragin' Cajuns play out of the Sun Belt Conference and the South Central region. They are coached by Kati Gyulai and are led individually by Piotre Banas who is ranked 19th in the region. The ULL doubles tandem of Shan Ellison and Zack Taylor are ranked 11th in the region.
The Cowboys are led in the rankings by junior Ivan Puchkarov, the third-ranked college tennis player in America. Puchkarov, freshman Oleksandr Nedovyesov and senior Daniel Byrnes, the Poke's top three singles players, all went 1-1 in the opening weekend of competition and each notched a victory over a ranked opponent.
In doubles competition, OSU had an outstanding opening weekend. The Cowboys, competing for the first time with three new doubles teams, took the doubles' point in both matches. At No. 1 doubles, Nedovyesov and Byrnes defeated Tulsa's eighth-ranked duo of Diego Camacho and Ross Cunnigham, 8-3. It was another upset at No. 2 doubles as Artie Burmistrau and Nathan Byrnes defeated the 12th-ranked tandem of Arnau Brugues and Federico Soirano, 8-2.
