January 24, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
The Oklahoma State men's tennis team and junior Ivan Puchkarov achieved the highest preseason rankings in school history when the Intercollegiate College Tennis Association released the preseason Fila College Tennis Rankings on Tuesday.
The Cowboys are ranked 16th in the poll, the highest preseason team ranking in the program's history. The previous best preseason ranking was 22nd, prior to the 2004 season.
OSU was the third highest-ranked team in the Big 12. Baylor came in at No. 2, while Texas was ranked No. 12. Texas A&M gave the Big 12 four teams in the top 25 with its No. 20 ranking.
After an outstanding fall campaign, Ivan Puchkarov had a meteoric rise in the rankings. Going into the fall season, the junior was ranked No. 61 in the individual rankings. After winning the Central Region Championships and making the semifinals of the ITA Indoor National Championships, Puchkarov enters the spring season ranked as the No. 3 player in college tennis. The No. 3 rankings is the highest by a Cowboy individual in the preseason.
A solid returning nucleus of Puchkarov and Daniel Byrnes, an All-American last season, combined with a pair of talented newcomers has head coach James Wadley's Cowboy tennis squad poised for a big season in 2007. Wadley is entering his 35th season at the helm of the program and is seven wins short of 600 career victories.
The Cowboys kick off the 2007 season as one of eight teams participating in the Central Region's Indoor Championships qualifier Jan. 19-20 in Tulsa. The winner of the tournament will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill., Feb. 16-19.
