Cowgirl Basketball Drops Heartbreaker To Texas Tech, 63-61
January 20, 2007 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team fell victim to late-game heroics by Texas Tech on Saturday morning as the Lady Raiders escaped Gallagher-Iba Arena with a 63-61 victory in front of 2,390 fans.
The two teams battled through a second half that saw neither squad lead by more than five and the lead change hands 12 times. However, Tech's (12-7 overall, 3-2 Big 12) Raquel Christian had the final say, draining a 15-foot jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining to send the Lady Raiders to their seventh consecutive win over the Cowgirls (14-4, 2-3).
“There is really no other way to say it, but just how disappointed we are. We felt this was a ball game we should have won,” OSU head coach Kurt Budke said. “I give (Texas Tech) credit for making big shots. We forced them into jump shots today and they kept knocking them down.”
The Cowgirls were saddled with foul trouble in the first half as their top two scorers, senior Rashidat Sadiq and junior Maria Cordero, combined to play just seven minutes. As a result the Cowgirls managed just 24 points in the period and were unable to take advantage of 13 Tech turnovers, allowing the Lady Raiders took a five-point lead into the break.
OSU opened the second half with an 11-1 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 35-30 before the teams went back and forth over the next 16 minutes.
A layup by Shaunte' Smith put the Cowgirls up 57-55 at the 2:17 mark before Tech answered with back-to-back buckets. Smith converted another layup a minute later to knot the score.
Both teams traded a pair of free throws in the last minute, the last two coming courtesy of OSU freshman Andrea Riley with eight seconds remaining before Christian knocked down the game winner.
Riley finished with a game-high 15 points, while junior Danielle Green added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Cowgirls will continue their four-game homestand on Wednesday when Colorado comes to town for a 7 p.m. contest.
