January 18, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's 16th-ranked men's tennis team will open the 2007 dual season when they travel to Tulsa to take part in the Central Region Qualifier Saturday and Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa's campus.
The qualifier will pit the top seven teams in the region against each other in a dual tournament format. The winner of the qualifier will advance to the 2007 USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Illinois Feb. 16-19.
The Cowboys are the top seed in the region and will receive a first-round bye. OSU will face the winner of Oklahoma and Nebraska Saturday at 4 p.m. The Sooners and Huskers are ranked No. 60 and 61, respectively.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 30 Arkansas will face Illinois State and No. 27 Tulsa will go against Wichita State. The championship match will be played Sunday at 4 p.m.
O-State is led by junior Ivan Puchkarov and senior Daniel Byrnes. Puchkarov is coming off a fantastic fall season and is currently the third-ranked player in college tennis. Byrnes was an All-American last season but battled injury in the fall and fell out of the rankings.
The Cowboys also return Artie Burmistrau, Olexsander Kotsiuk, Nathan Byrnes and Jason Wright. All were letterwinners for OSU last season. The No. 16 ranking is the highest a Cowboy tennis team has been ranked in the preseason.
