On the win over Kansas
“I think the two most inexperienced teams in the Big 12 Conference played out here tonight. We have so many new faces out there and so do they. A lot of our players have not played in this league before and they need to understand the commitment and the toughness that it takes to play in this league. This league is no joke because there is not a night off anywhere you play. Every night will be tough. We got a win. I am very proud of the girls, coaches and our university because there has been some tough times over the past couple seasons. This is a step in the right direction.”
On the importance of getting the first win
“I think getting the first win was huge. They try not to talk about the past history and what happened last year. We got rid of the people saying we haven't won a lot games in a row by winning road games at Hawaii. The girls have to believe we can get it done. I think tonight's win helps them believe that we can win against other Big 12 opponents. It wont be easy, but we can cause some problems in this league.”
On how to win conference road games
“We have got to handle our opponents' crowds a lot better than we did at Texas Tech. We can't ever afford to look past somebody and look at one game at a time. We just try to play well. If we win, fantastic, but if we lose let's play better than we did at Texas Tech. Lets show people that we can handle our business and show more poise on the road.”
On the play of sophomore Shaunte' Smith
“I named Shaunte' (Smith) team captain this week, as have not named one this year. I did that because she does everything we ask her to do on and off the court. She tries to do the right thing every single day. She has been a tremendous leader to this team. With all of these newcomers, I did not have one certain leader that I would name team captain at the beginning of the season because I wanted somebody to step up and take that role. Shaunte' has done that. I am very proud of her.”
