January 14, 2007 | Cowgirl Basketball
For the second consecutive outing, the Oklahoma State women's basketball team put an end to a conference losing streak with its 45-44 victory over Iowa State in front of 9,982 fans inside Hilton Coliseum.
After disposing of its 25-game losing streak overall against league foes on Wednesday night with its win against Kansas, OSU (14-2 overall, 2-1 Big 12) halted its 26-game road losing streak against Big 12 competition with the down-to-the-wire win over the Cyclones (13-4, 1-3).
The Cowgirls' victory marked their first road win in Big 12 play since their triumph on Feb. 26, 2003 at Texas A&M and also gave second-year OSU head coach Kurt Budke his 100th win at the Division I level.
After leading for most of the first half, the Cowgirls hit a a scoring drought that lasted 6:20 and allowed ISU to close the period on a 10-2 run and take a 23-21 lead at the break.
At the midway point of the second half, the Cyclones held a 10-point lead before the Cowgirls began to climb back into the contest. OSU regained the lead with 3:34 remaining on Taylor Hardeman's third 3-pointer of the game and stretched the lead to 45-41 two minutes later when Danielle Green grabbed a rebound and went the length of the floor for a reverse layup.
However, ISU's Heather Ezell hit a 3-pointer of her own with six seconds remaining to set up a wild finish. After a pair of Cyclone fouls, OSU turned over the inbounds pass under ISU's basket, but Ezell missed a layup with less than two seconds left to give the Cowgirls their first back-to-back league wins since 2004.
OSU, which shot just 34.6 percent from the floor, was led by Green's 13 points, while Hardeman added nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Cyclones shot just 29.6 percent from the floor, including an 8-of-30 effort from the 3-point line, and where led by Nicky Wieben's 15 points.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when they host in-state rival Oklahoma in Stillwater.
