Laura Matthews Named To Canadian World Amateur Team
September 07, 2006 | Cowgirl Golf
Entering her second season as the head coach for the Cowgirl program, Matthews is coming off a successful summer worldwide. In addition to a runner-up finish at the Ontario Ladies Amateur, the Essex, Ontario native finished fifth at the Australian Ladies Amateur and sixth at the European Ladies Amateur.
Matthews advanced to the third round of match play at the British Ladies Amateur and was the low amateur at the CN Canadian Women's Open, an LPGA event. She also finished ninth at the Canadian Ladies Amateur, an event she won in 2005.
The addition of Matthews to the field brings the number of players with OSU ties in the event to three, as Cowboy sophomore Jonathan Moore and former Cowboy Trip Kuehne will compete for the U.S. men's squad.
The 2006 World Amateur Team Championships will be played at De Zalze Golf Club and Stellenbosch Golf Club in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Both championships are conducted over 72 holes of stroke play for teams of three players. Two rounds are played on each course with the two lowest scores to count in each round. The team with the lowest combined score wins.
The women's competition will be played Oct. 18-21, followed by the men's event on Oct. 26-29.
