Cowgirl Basketball Adds Two Junior College Standouts
May 01, 2006 | Cowgirl Basketball
Maria Cordero and Danielle Green, both of Central Arizona College, cast their lot with the Cowgirls and will be eligible to compete during the 2006-07 season.
The duo led CAC to a combined record of 69-2 over the past two seasons, highlighted by the Vaqueras' 35-1 mark and run to the 2005 NJCAA national title. In 2006, CAC tallied a 34-1 record and a third-place finish at the national tournament.
“Both Maria and Danielle are winners and the attitude that they bring to us is important,” Budke said. “We are very excited to get both of them because they are great people and I think our fans are going to enjoy watching them play.”
Cordero, a 6-3 post player, was named an honorable mention NJCAA All-American in 2006 and was a first-team all-region pick as well. The Santa Barbara, Calif., native was a first-team All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference performer after averaging 15.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore while hitting 60 percent of her shots from the floor.
In addition, she was named to the 2006 NJCAA All-Tournament Team and was tabbed as the conference player of the week on one occasion.
“Maria is a power player that can shoot the free-throw line jumper and is not just a low-block player. She can open up the floor from a post standpoint,” Budke said.
A 5-8 guard, Green earned second-team NJCAA All-America honors and was an honorable mention Kodak/WBCA All-America pick in 2006. The Philadelphia native averaged 18.8 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game on her way to earning first-team all-conference and all-region recognition as a sophomore.
Green was also chosen as the conference player of the week on three occasions last season.
“Danielle can be a lockdown defender for us. She will do whatever it takes to win and she does a lot of things right,” Budke said.
The duo joins Argyle (Texas) High School product Ally Clardy, 2006 first-team Kodak/WBCA All-American Rita Kollo of Colby (Kan.) Community College and Andrea Riley of Dallas' Lincoln High School, all of which signed during the fall signing period, in OSU's incoming recruiting class.
