No. 19 Cowboys shutout Wichita State, 7-0
April 12, 2006 | Cowboy Tennis
With the temperature climbing toward 90 degrees on Wednesday afternoon, Oklahoma State's 19th-ranked men's tennis team quickly beat Wichita State, 7-0.
“This was the first really hot day we've played in, yet this year,” said OSU coach James Wadley. “I thought we did an adequate job.”
The Cowboys (12-4) swept doubles and followed it by quickly sweeping singles. Every match was won in straight sets except for at No. 1, where No. 19 Daniel Byrnes defeated Goran Vujaklija in a tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets.
Even though Daniel had to win in a tie-breaker for the second consecutive match, Wadley said it's to be expected every time the junior steps on the court.
“Daniel had to gut it out again,” Wadley said. “But that's what happens every time you go out onto the court at the No. 1 position.”
Cowboy senior Felipe Diaz was the first to win his singles match, beating Boris Gubic, 6-1, 6-1. But it was followed minutes later by freshman Olexsander Kotsiuk's 6-3, 6-3 victory.
After winning a tie-breaker in his first set, Tomas Bohunicky won his second set, 6-3, to seal the Cowboys' ninth non-conference victory.
The Cowboys return to the courts Thursday at 2 p.m. to face No. 43 SMU (14-6).
“SMU is a much tougher team,” Wadley said. “They're coming off of a tough loss to No. 17 Notre Dame. They've beat Texas Christian, which is a team that's been ranked as high as 20 this year.”
