No. 59 Cowgirl Tennis Rolls to Fourth Straight Victory
April 10, 2006 | Cowgirl Tennis
The win against Iowa State (3-10, 0-8) was Oklahoma State's first shutout win since beating Iowa State, 7-0, last season in Ames, Iowa. The Cowgirls (10-7, 4-3) are 28-0 all-time against the Cyclones. The four match win streak is the longest for the Cowgirls since their 2002-03 Big 12 Championship season.
After a disappointing showing in doubles play against Denver on Friday, the Cowgirls came back and swept the doubles action on Saturday.
Zana Masnic and Yawna Allen, who lost their first match of the year at No. 1 doubles on Friday, came through with a strong performance against Iowa State and quickly put away Eve Soriano and Jill Palen 8-2.
Oklahoma State clinched the doubles point at No. 2 doubles when Iryna Tkachenko and Marta Tsivka won a close match against Kara Hickey and Elizabeth Chermel 9-7.
The Cowgirls completed the sweep when Lauren Simmons and Zuzanna Osinska downed Chrissy Derouin and Danielle Uscinski 8-6. It was the eighth victory of the year for the duo.
O-State kept it rolling in singles action as the Cowgirls won five of the matches in straight sets. Tkachenko struck first for the Cowgirls. The sophomore picked up a victory at No. 1 singles against Palen 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, Oklahoma State got another strong performance and straight sets victory out of Simmons when the junior defeated Hickey 6-0, 6-2.
The Cowgirls clinched the match with another victory from Tsivka at the No. 5 position. The junior beat Derouin, 6-2, 6-0, to win her team-leading 14th victory this season.
At No. 3 singles, Masnic won her fourth match in a row by besting Uscinski 6-2, 6-0.
Oklahoma State moved the score to 6-0 after a win from Allen at the No. 4 spot. The sophomore broke through with a big victory after defeating Chermel 6-1, 6-3. It was Allen's second singles match since returning from an injury.
The Cowgirls completed the shut out when Jessica Collins defeated Soriano at No. 6 singles. The sophomore took an early, 4-1, lead in the first set before Soriano fought back to win the first set 6-4. The tables turned in the second set when Collins found herself down, 3-1, before fighting back to take the set 6-4. Collins then put Soriano away by winning the tiebreaker 10-4.
The Cowgirls will finish the weekend when they host No. 46 Colorado on Sunday at the DeBois Tennis Center at 10 a.m. The 25th-ranked men's tennis team will host No. 8 Baylor on Sunday at 2 p.m. or shortly after the conclusion of the women's match.
