February 25, 2006 | Cowgirl Golf
Herrera recorded an eagle and two birdies in a three-hole stretch that contributed to her even-par performance.
“I was very proud of the girls' performance today,” said Head Coach Laura Matthews. “This is our best start to a tournament since I got here, and I feel we will continue our good play tomorrow. The conditions were ideal, with the temperature around 80 degrees and steady wins ranging from 20-25 miles per hour.”
Senior Jennifer Karr carded a two-over 74 and is tied for 10th place individually, while junior Mallorie Underwood shot a 75 and is tied for 17th. Freshmen Karin Kinnerud and Pernilla Lindberg each shot a 79 and are tied for 46th place.
Six strokes separate the top-six teams in the tournament. Kent State is two strokes back of Purdue at 297, while Arkansas is in third place at 298 and Florida is in fourth at 299. Ann Laney of North Carolina sits atop the leaderboard with a 68 as the Tar Heels are in sixth place with a 301 team score.
The tournament will continue on Saturday with another round of 18 holes, and conclude on Sunday with a final round of 18.
