Puchkarov Earns Top Spot in Central Region

Oklahoma State tennis standout Ivan Puchkarov has gained the No. 1 ranking in the Central Region after an outstanding fall season.
Puchkarov entered the 2006 fall season ranked No. 61 in the country. The junior showed early that the ranking would not hold true as he advanced to the round of 16 at the prestigious Polo All-American Championship, won the Central Region title and advanced to the semifinals of the National Indoor Championship.
The Simfevopol, Ukraine native finished the fall with a 14-2 record with his lone losses coming against eventual national champion Arnau Brugues, Tulsa, and to No. 1-ranked Ben Kohlloeffel of UCLA. Kohlloeffel, the defending national indoor champion, defeated Puchkarov in a third-set tiebreaker in the National Indoor semifinals.
Returning Cowboy All-American Daniel Byrnes comes in at No. 11 in the Central Region. The senior entered the season ranked No. 11 in the country, but was hampered by injury problems during the fall.
Senior Artie Burmistrau falls right behind Byrnes at No. 12 in the rankings. Burmistrau advanced to the round of 16 at the region's championship.
In the double's rankings, the brother combo of Daniel and Nathan Byrnes, who were ranked No. 8 nationally in the preseason, finish the fall ranked fifth in the region.
The tandem of Puchkarov and Burmistrau, playing together for the first time this season, end the fall ranked No. 10 in the region.
