Cowgirl Basketball Adds Three During Fall Signing Period
November 09, 2006 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team has signed a trio of prep standouts to National Letters of Intent it was announced today by Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke.
High school seniors Taylor Booze, Kristin Hernandez and Alex Richardson signed on Wednesday and will join the OSU program for the 2007-08 season.
“This group increases the athleticism on our team. These three get us closer to how I want to play this game,” Budke said. “It gives us added depth and lets us extend our defense past halfcourt and that is something I want to get to in this league.”
Booze is ranked among the top 40 prospects in the state of Texas and was also rated as the 38th best point guard by the All Star Girls Report. The 5-6 guard will play this season for Duncanville High School after transferring from Dallas Lincoln where she was a teammate of current OSU point guard Andrea Riley.
“Taylor is very quick and very athletic,” Budke said. “She is pretty much a clone of Andrea Riley. Her offensive game is coming around, but she has great potential because she has a great looking jump shot. She continues to upgrade the athleticism on this team.”
Ranked as the No. 62 prospect overall by the All Star Girls Report and as one of the top 20 prospects in Texas, Hernandez earned all-state honors last season after helping Duncanville High School to the Class 5A regional quarterfinals. She finished the season as the Pantherettes' leading scorer at 14.6 points per game. In addition, the 5-10 guard averaged six rebounds and four steals per contest.
“Kristin is a very powerful two or three swing person,” Budke said. “I think she has a chance to be a great player. She can jump out of the gym and she already has the strength a lot of high school kids don't have. She has college strength right now where she could jump in and play immediately.”
A 6-3 post player, Richardson led Edmond (Okla.) Santa Fe High School to a 24-3 mark as a junior and a berth in the Class 6A state title game on her way to making the all-tournament team. Richardson was also named an all-state selection after averaging 16 points, 12 rebounds and 5.7 blocked shots per game. As a sophomore, Richardson averaged 15.7 points per game while helping the Wolves reach the state tournament for the first time in the program's history.
“Alex is a 6-3 post that is an active post. When you can find a post in this country that can run the floor and is very smart like Alex is, you are lucky to get her. We were lucky to get Alex because she fits into what we are recruiting,” Budke said.
