Cowgirl Basketball Routs Oklahoma Flyers In Exhibition Opener
November 04, 2006 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team opened the 2006-07 exhibition season in impressive fashion, rolling past the Oklahoma Flyers by a 105-45 count in front of 1,651 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowgirls (1-0) had 12 different players score while hitting 56 percent of their shots from the field. On the defensive end, OSU held the Flyers (1-2) to a 30 percent shooting effort and forced them into 30 turnovers. The Cowgirls also overmatched the Flyers on the glass, finishing with a 58-26 rebounding advantage.
“Last year, we did not have the ability to create much offense with our defense, as you can see that is slowly changing,” Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke said. “I believe we are getting closer to playing basketball the way we want to play it. We are not there yet, but I think this is an exciting team to watch.”
Freshman Andrea Riley sparked the offense early with three consecutive layups as OSU built a double-digit lead four minutes into the contest.
After taking a 46-25 lead into the halftime locker room, the Cowgirls used a 35-0 run over a 10-minute stretch in the second half to put the game away.
A pair of newcomers led the way as junior Rita Kollo finished with a game-high 20 points after hitting eight of her nine shots, while sophomore Natasha Doh came off the bench to score 16 points.
Sophomore Shaunte' Smith and Riley also reached double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Riley, a native of Dallas, also had a game-high eight assists in just 16 minutes, while junior Danielle Green added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Cowgirls will close out the exhibition season on Nov. 6 when they play host to East Central inside Gallagher-Iba Arena at 7 p.m.
