Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Sean Sutton
On the game
Overall, I was pleased with the way we played tonight. That is a team that has won 20 games the last two years. I think they will have a chance to compete with Northwestern State and possibly Sam Houston State for a shot at the NCAA Tournament.
I thought that we got off to a very good start offensively. JamesOn (Curry) hit some big shots to get us going. From an offensive standpoint, I dont think that we could play much better at this time of the year with the way our shooting percentages were. We really shot free throws well. We only turned it over 12 times and had 18 assists.
The defense was really the letdown tonight. We fouled entirely too many times. We put them on the line 30 times in the game and we got some guys in foul trouble. I didnt feel like we defended with much toughness and much grit in the last 10 minutes. We gave up a lot of points down the stretch. Overall, it was a good win. Especially when you consider Marcus Dove didnt play, David Monds was pretty much a non-factor because of foul trouble, and Mario (Boggan) did not have a typical Mario night. From that standpoint, it was a good win and I am proud of our players.
On the play of junior guard JamesOn Curry
I dont think that I have seen that in my 17 years at Oklahoma State where a guys stat line reads 35 points, nine assists and he doesnt turn it over. He did not rebound well. I did not think he defended great down the stretch, but from an offensive standpoint, that was a big-time shooting display. He played with a lot of confidence tonight. I thought that he played with the type of confidence that he played with his freshman year. I think that is the best he has looked since his freshman year. I dont remember a game last year when he looked like that for an entire game. He played like a big-time player tonight.
On the play of Tyler Hatch
He doesnt make mental mistakes. He played 19 minutes tonight. He got his hands on some balls. He had two rebounds and he didnt turn the ball over. When we get into a position where he has to play double-digit minutes, I have a lot of confidence from the standpoint that he wont make very many mistakes. He will pass the ball, he will screen, he will reverse the ball. He is a solid defender and a solid rebounder. When put in that position, I think he is capable of doing the job.
Sophomore Guard Terrel Harris
On the play of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
(Texas A&M Corpus Christi) was a good team because they had a good inside presents and they had shooters who could hit from the outside. Their guards were able to penetrate well against us tonight as they lit up the threes a few times.
On the play of Texas A&M-Corpus Christis center Chris Daniels
There big men did a good job grabbing offensive rebounds and giving them second chance opportunities. I was able to play with 7-footer Chris Daniels this summer, so I knew him coming into tonight's game. I told him before the game to take it easy against us because I knew he was the type of player who will attack the boards. He did a great job tonight.
On the play of JamesOn Curry
I did not think (JamesOn) Curry was going to miss. In the first half, It seemed like he did not miss more than two shots because he was hitting so many. Every time he caught the ball, it seemed like I was running back on defense. We made sure we screened for him to get him open. A lot of the shots that he hit, he created himself. Once he got more aggressive, it seemed that his shots opened up.
Junior Guard JamesOn Curry
On him scoring a career high 35 points
I was feeling it, but at the same time I was just having fun. Scoring wise, I felt that was the best game I have played in a while. I could not have done this good without my teammates. We were running the floor and getting the ball to right spot at the right times. It was not me doing it. My teammates were the ones who I give the credit to. Even though I scored 35 points, I was more happy with dishing out nine assists. When you make your teammates better, it makes your game better at the same time.
On the team playing with players in foul trouble
We wanted to win so bad. Everyone was getting in the game and we were not able to sub because some of us were fouling out. We were tired at that one point, and looked at each other and laughed. That helped us play harder and we had a lot of fun.
