Cowgirls Remain Undefeated With 86-56 Victory Over Pacific
November 25, 2006 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team ran its record to 4-0 after an 86-56 victory over Pacific on Friday night in front of 2,275 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The victory gave the program its best start since winning its first four games of the 2000-01 season,
Pacific (1-2) opened the scoring on its first possession with a 3-pointer by Kelsey Lavender, who finished with a game-high 20 points. However, the Tigers missed their next 11 attempts from the field as the Cowgirls took control by scoring the next 17 points of the game.
OSU had to overcome a slow start of its own, committing five turnovers in the game's first three minutes before its offensive spurt.
"I told our players after the game, we have to expect perfection, excellence and to win. We have to do it the right way, and not walk into a gym and slop through things,” Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke said.
After watching their lead swell to 20 in the first half, the Cowgirls saw the margin dwindle as Pacific began to heat up from beyond the 3-point arc, hitting three treys to help cut the margin to 49-43 early in the second stanza.
OSU took advantage of another Tiger drought through the middle of the second half, putting together a 13-0 run to put the game away.
Four players finished in double figures for the Cowgirls led by senior Rashidat Sadiq's 15 points as OSU broke the 70-point mark for the fourth consecutive game. The Lagos, Nigeria native hit five of her eight shots from the floor and was joined in double figures by junior Maria Cordero, freshman Andrea Riley and senior Christian Hood.
Cordero finished with 14 points for her third double-figure scoring game of the season, while Riley enjoyed a breakout performance with career high point (14) and assist (7) totals.
Hood helped spark the squad off the bench with 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Sunday when they host Fresno State at 2 p.m. in Stillwater.
