Cowgirls Run Past Southern, 86-46

Oklahoma State's women's basketball team improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2000-01 season on Tuesday night after defeating Southern, 86-46, in front of 4,154 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
OSU raced out to an early 11-2 lead over the Jaguars (0-3) before briefly cooling off from the field. The Cowgirls missed on six of their eight shots during one stretch to allow Southern to pull within 24-19 with five minutes remaining in the half before senior Rashidat Sadiq got going down the stretch.
The Connecticut transfer scored seven of her 15 first-half points over the final four minutes to give the Cowgirls a 35-24 lead at the break. Sadiq nearly recorded a double-double in the first 20 minutes, adding nine rebounds as well.
The Lagos, Nigeria native finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs, and became the third different OSU player to record a double-double this season.
The Cowgirls utilized a balanced scoring attack as all 13 players scored and dominated the glass, outrebounding Southern by a 58-17 clip on the night.
OSU clamped down defensively in the second half, limiting the Jaguars to eight field goals and a 33 percent shooting effort to pull away.
Junior Maria Cordero continued to impress in just her third game as a Cowgirl, scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds to help OSU post its second win over an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago.
The Cowgirls also knocked off tourney participant UC Riverside in the season opener on Nov. 10.
"I was happy with the defense we played. We held them to 46 points, and they hit some tough shots to get to that mark.,” Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke said. “They had the 3-point basket before the half and a couple of other jumpers with a hand in their face. Defensively, we were in pretty good position all night long."
The Cowgirls will return to action on Friday when they host Pacific at 7 p.m. in Stillwater.
