Oklahoma State Takes Down Owls, 95-50
November 11, 2006 | Cowboy Basketball
Sutton, who had been an assistant, temporarily replaced his father on the Cowboys' bench for the final 11 games last season after Eddie Sutton was involved in a drunk-driving accident in February. The move became permanent in May, when Eddie Sutton retired in fifth place on college basketball's wins list with a 798-315 record.
The elder Sutton watched the game from a front-row seat, wearing an orange blazer, as Oklahoma State piled up its biggest margin of victory in a season opener since his Cowboys debut in 1990 - a 111-47 defeat of Colgate.
Sean Sutton's opening win avenged one of only two nonconference losses at home in his father's 16-year tenure. In the teams' only previous meeting, Florida Atlantic upset an 11th-ranked Cowboys squad 83-81 at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Dec. 1, 1998, to end a 79-game Oklahoma State winning streak in home nonconference games.
The only other such loss came last year against Northwestern State - the next opponent for the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State started to pull away early with a 15-2 run that included three baskets by Boggan and the first two 3-pointers of freshman Obi Muonelo's career. The Cowboys hit eight of their first nine shots and led 21-9 after Muonelo's second 3-pointer.
Muonelo added two more 3-pointers in the first half and the lead reached 48-25 on JamesOn Curry's 3-pointer near the end of the first half. The Cowboys were up 20 at halftime after shooting 70 percent in the first half.
Oklahoma State continued to distance itself with a 17-0 run that included a pair of dunks by Marcus Dove and back-to-back 3-pointers by Harris. Curry's 3-pointer capped the run and made it 70-32.
Muonelo hit his first five shots, including four from 3-point range, and finished with 16 points. Curry scored 14 and Dove had 12 for Oklahoma State, which made 68 percent of its shots and hit 14 3-pointers - the second most in school history.
Paul Graham scored 14 points and Carlos Monroe added 11 for Florida Atlantic in the head coaching debut for former NBA player Rex Walters, who took over after Matt Doherty went to Southern Methodist. Doherty led the Owls to their third winning season in their 18-year history.
