October 04, 2006 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State junior Ivan Puchkarov got his third straight-sets victory in as many days to advance to the main draw of the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championship at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. on Wednesday.
“Ivan is playing very well, he has not lost a set yet,” head coach James Wadley. “He is playing as well as you can expect this early in the season.”
Puchkarov, ranked 61st in the country, quickly put away Michigan's 113st-ranked Ryan Heller, 6-2, 6-1, in the qualifying round of the tournament. The Ukraine native has won three matches in three days to advance to the main draw of the prestigious tournament.
Since wining a first-set tiebreaker in the first round, Puchkarov has yet to yield more than three games in a single set.
Puchkarov, a unanimous All-Big 12 selection last season, will now join teammate and 11th-ranked Daniel Byrnes in the main draw. Byrnes will face 30th-ranked Jakob Cech, of Fresno State, in the first round. Puchkarov will face 31st-ranked Andreas Siljestrim of Middle Tennessee State in the opening round.
Byrnes will also team with brother Nathan for the doubles portion of the tournament. The pair, ranked eighth in the country, have a tough first-round match as they will battle Tennessee's 10th-ranked duo of Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers in the first round.
The 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championship will continue tomorrow from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus with first and second round singles action and first round doubles play in the main draw.
