October 31, 2006 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State junior Ivan Puchkarov will look to finish his outstanding fall as he travels to Columbus, Ohio, to compete at the 2006 ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships November 2-5 at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
The prestigious tournament began in 1978 and is one of three collegiate national championships held throughout the season, the other two being the ITA All-American Championships and the NCAA Championships held in May.
Players qualified for the tournament by making their respective region's finals, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament or by a wild card selection.
Puchkarov will have a tall task in the first round as he faces Georgia's 13th-ranked Luis Flores in the first round. Flores qualified for the tournament by making the quarterfinals of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament earlier this fall. Puchkarov, ranked 61st, qualified by making the finals of the Central Region championships earlier this month. The Ukraine native would go on to win the tournament.
Cowboy senior Daniel Byrnes, an All-American last season, was invited to the tournament but declined due to an injury.
Puchakrov has had an impressive fall as he advanced to the round of 16 at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament and won the 2006 Central Region Championship. Puchkarov also entered a futures event earlier this month and advanced to the round of 16 before falling to the top seed.
