Byrnes and Puchkarov Advance to Quarterfinals at Regional Championship

Oklahoma State's men's tennis team had a solid day as Ivan Puchakrov and Daniel Byrnes advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa on Saturday. Byrnes and younger brother Nathan also advanced to the semifinals in the doubles bracket.
No. 11 Byrnes, the region's top seed, faced Drake's Maor Zirkin in the round of 16 and rolled to a, 6-1, 6-4, victory. Byrnes, an All-American a year ago, will face Arkansas Little-Rock's Dinko Halachev in the quarterfinals on Sunday as he looks to defend his Central Region Championship.
On the other side of the bracket, Byrnes' teammate Puchkarov, the region's third seed, also got a straight-sets victory as he cruised to a, 6-2, 6-1, win over Arkansas Little-Rock's Edson Abrao. Puchkarov will face Tulsa's Will Gray in the semifinals.
The two met last season where Puchkarov beat Gray in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch a Cowboy victory over Tulsa.
In other singles action, Artie Burmistrau looked good early as he took the first set, 6-1, from Tulsa's Federico Soriano. Burmistrau hung tough but was eliminated by Soriano, the second seed in the region, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Cowboys also faired well in doubles action as the Cowboy tandem of Byrnes and Byrnes won two matches to advance to the semifinals. The top-seeded duo will face No. 48-ranked Arnau Brugues and Soriano, Tulsa, in the semifinals on Sunday.
