Puchkarov Advances at All-American Tournament

Oklahoma State junior Ivan Puchkarov won his first-round qualifying match at the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. on Monday.
Puchkarov, ranked 61st in the country, faced Ole Miss' 118th-ranked Robbye Poole in the first round of the tournament's qualifying draw on Monday. The first set was close but the Cowboy took the tiebreaker 7-6 (1). The second set was not nearly as close as last season's Big 12 Newcomer of the Year blanked Poole, 6-0, to advance to Tuesday's second round.
Puchkarov will face Sacramento State's Anton Stryhas in the second round. Stryhas advanced to the second round by knocking off Tennessee's Adam Hubble 6-0, 7-3. In order to advance to the main draw of the tournament, Puchkarov, needs to win two more matches. Teammate Daniel Byrnes has automatically qualified for the main draw.
In other action, sophomore Nathan Byrnes was defeated by Michigan's Brian Hung in the first round, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3.
The tournament will continue Tuesday with the second round of qualifying and the first and second rounds of the double's qualifying tournament. The main draw will begin on Thursday.
