Puchkarov Continues Outstanding Fall, Advances to Round of 16

Oklahoma State junior Ivan Puchkarov continued his outstanding play this fall as he advanced to the round of 16 at the United States Tennis Association's Mansfield Futures Tournament at the Walnut Creek Country Club on Wednesday.
Puchkarov, a unanimous All-Big 12 selection a year ago, faced Dennis Ziukovic in the first round of the main draw and beat the 763rd-ranked player it the world, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Puchkarov will have a tough task on Thursday as he faces top-seeded Martin Fischer. Fischer is ranked 431st in the world and advanced to the round of 16 by beating John Houston Barrick, 6-2, 6-3.
Puchkarov advanced to the main draw by winning three tough matches in the qualifying rounds earlier this week. Among his wins were victories against Alex Menichini, who knocked former Cowboy great Mark Van Elden out of the NCAA Tournament in 2004, and Dave Lingman, a former All-American at Harvard.
The tournament will continue tomorrow with the round of 16, while the Cowboy tennis team will be in action beginning on Friday at the 2006 Wilson/ ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa.
