Cowgirl Golfers Complete Day 1 at NCAA West Regionals

Cowgirl junior Karin Sjödin carded a one-over-par 73 and is in 11th place individually. The Swedish native birdied three holes to offset four bogeys. Sophomore Mallorie Underwood finished with a 74, and is tied for 16th place. She was three over until the par-5 18th hole, which she birdied to finish at two over.
Tennessee leads the team race with a three-over 291 following Thursday's round. USC is in second, two strokes back at 293. Georgia and California are tied for third at 296, while BYU (298) rounds out the top five. The Cougars' Rachel Newren and Cal's Sophia Sheridan sit atop the individual leaderboard with identical three-under 69s.
Senior Annie Thurman-Young, the two-time Big 12 individual champion, struggled on the back nine during the first round. After entering the turn with a two-over 38, she bogeyed six of the final nine holes to finish with a seven-over 79. Her only saving grace was a birdie on the par-5 No. 12.
Sophomore Ali Griffin, an Edmond, Okla., product, finished with a solid 78, the third-best score for the team, and is in 61st place. Fellow sophomore Candie Herrera carded a 79 and is tied for 71st place with Thurman-Young.
The tournament, played at the New Mexico State University Golf Course, will continue on Friday with another round of 18 holes, and conclude on Saturday with a final round of 18. The top-eight teams and top-two individuals not affiliated with those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 17-20, at the Meadows Course in Sunriver, Ore.
