Men's Tennis Hosts Wichita State in Regular Season Finale
April 25, 2005 | Cowboy Tennis
The Cowboys (18-5 overall, 5-2 Big 12) are coming off a 4-3 victory over Oklahoma on April 20 in Norman. The victory earned the team a tie for second in the conference with Texas A&M and Texas Tech and a No. 3 seed in this weekend's Big 12 Tournament. They will play sixth-seeded Oklahoma in Friday's first round.
The match will mark the final home appearance for seniors Mark Van Elden and Boris Kuharic.
Van Elden and Kuharic transferred from Auburn and Minnesota, respectively, prior to the 2003 season and made an immediate impact by helping the team advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. They guided the team to a repeat tournament appearance in 2004, falling to Arkansas in the first round.
In 2005, the pair played an integral role in earning OSU a No. 10 national ranking, its highest ever. They also helped the team win matches against perennial powers Stanford, Harvard and Texas.
Van Elden has played No. 1 singles since he stepped on campus, and currently has a 49-15 record in dual matches. Kuharic has compiled an equally impressive 46-18 mark during his career at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots.
Wichita State is 14-8 on the season and finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 6-1 record. Oklahoma State has played one MVC opponent this year, knocking off regular season champion Indiana State 7-0 in February.
OSU leads the all-time series against the Shockers 32-17 and has won the last five meetings.
Free pizza and soda will be provided between doubles and singles play.
