Shorthanded Cowboys Pick up Third Straight Win, 4-2
April 17, 2005 | Cowboy Tennis
The 14th-ranked Cowboys (17-5) tallied the win despite not having their top athlete perform, senior Mark Van Elden.
“Today was just a tremendous match for us,” said head coach James Wadley. “It is difficult to beat a team that is as good as TCU, especially when you do not have all your athletes competing. All of our guys played hard today and turned in a terrific team effort.”
OSU started the match by picking up victories in two of the three doubles positions. At No. 3 doubles, Tomas Bohunicky and Artsem Burmistrau picked up the 8-6 victory.
Juan Felipe Diaz and Boris Kuharic gave the Pokes the early team lead by defeating the nation's 11th-ranked doubles tandem, 4-3. The win was the combo's third over a top-20 duo.
TCU notched the next two team points by claiming victories at the No. 6 and 1 positions, respectively.
The Cowboys rattled off the next three team scores en route to the 4-2 victory.
“I am really proud of the performance of our team today,” Wadley said. “Everyone picked their game up. This was a complete team victory.”
At No. 3 singles, sophomore Daniel Byrnes rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Radu Barbu, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Diaz followed suit by picking up the close 7-6(2), 7-6(3), straight set decision over Jordan Freitas at the fifth position.
Burmistrau clinched the Cowboy victory by defeating Jacopo Tezza in come-from-behind fashion at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
