Sooners Extend Winning Streak Against Cowgirls
March 04, 2005 | Cowgirl Basketball
After Oklahoma State rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to pull within 43-39, the Sooners scored the next six points -- including four free throws by Dionnah Jackson.
Higgins, who was 4-for-9 from 3-point range, hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game to make it 52-41 and the Sooners (16-11, 8-8 Big 12) were in control. Â Christian Hood pulled Oklahoma State within 58-50 on a three-point play, but that was as close as the Cowgirls (7-19, 2-14) would get.
Lauren Shoush grabbed a loose ball and converted a layup and Higgins took a pass from Rush to score off a backdoor cut to push Oklahoma's lead back to 12. Shoush hit a 3-pointer from the left side to ice it at 67-54.
Jackson finished with 14 points and Shoush added 10 for Oklahoma.
Nina Stone, who scored nine of the Cowgirls' first 12 points to help close the gap, had 18 points to lead Oklahoma State.
Higgins hit 3-pointers on Oklahoma's first two possessions and the Sooners rushed out to a 17-7 lead following a jumper by Higgins from the left side. The Cowgirls answered with eight straight points and pulled within two after a pair of free throws from Destanie Sykes.
But Oklahoma, which led the entire game, pulled away again with an 11-2 run that Rush started with a right-handed flip in the lane. Beky Preston added a basket from the right post and Chelsi Welch and Antoinette Wadsworth scored on offensive rebounds before Rush nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing to put Oklahoma ahead 31-19.
Jackson took an inbounds pass and ran the length of the floor for a layup to give Oklahoma a 34-22 halftime lead.
