In his three seasons at GHS, he accumulated an overall mark of 60-35 while leading the squad to a pair of district championships.
During the 1999-2000 campaign, Hughey led Grapeland High to a 22-9 record, capturing the district championship and a berth in the regional semifinals.
Hughey's squad repeated as district champions the following season, sharing the distinction after compiling a 19-13 mark. His 2000-2001 squad advanced to the area playoff round where they were defeated by the eventual state champions.
In his final season, Grapeland posted a 19-13 mark that was highlighted by a second-place finish in district play and a berth in the regional quarterfinals where GHS fell to the eventual state champions.
Hughey also served as the head track coach at Grapeland, taking over a squad that had just three participants and producing a state championship qualifier last season.
Hughey was named the school's athletic coordinator for its girls' programs before assuming his role on the OSU staff.
Hughey began his coaching career at Hardin-Simmons as a student assistant before moving on to a graduate position while working on his master's degree, which he completed this past spring.
During his five seasons at HSU, the Cowgirls posted an 85-41 record, winning three conference championships and advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1999.
Hughey and his wife, Jenny, have two sons, Jacob and Bobby.
