Cowboy Netters Beat Memphis, 5-1
February 05, 2005 | Cowboy Tennis
Felipe Diaz got the Cowboys off to a strong start, losing just one game on his way to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Marten Tamla at No. 5 singles. Artie Burmistrau followed suit at the no. 4 position, easily beating Mark Finnegan, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 44 Mark Van Elden continued his winning ways at the No. 1 position, defeating Alex Bucewicz, 7-6, 6-2.
Tomas Bohunicky dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to James Spence at No. 2 singles. Spence, who usually plays in the top spot for the Tigers, dropped down a notch to play Bohunicky in the No. 2 slot.
At No. 6 singles, sophomore Daniel Byrnes picked up his first win of the year, a hard fought 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Scott Felsenthal.
Boris Kuharic clinched the match with his 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over Alex Jago at No. 3 singles. Kuharic got off to a slow start, but rebounded with 15 aces in the second set to gain momentum and win the match.
“We played really well. It was a good team effort to beat this team 5-1,” head coach James Wadley said. “Mark had a good match with no mistakes in the second set. Artie had his typical match. Felipe played the best of anyone today, and we are happy about Daniel getting a win after his injury.”
The doubles point was not played due to scheduling conflicts.
Oklahoma State returns to the court on Feb. 12 for a 10 a.m. match against Indiana State in Broken Arrow, Okla.
