Cowgirl Basketball Knocks Off UNC Wilmington, 66-49
December 20, 2005 | Cowgirl Basketball
OSU (3-4) got out of the gate quickly, hitting its first four shots from the floor to open the contest on a 10-2 run that included five points from Shaunte' Smith. The freshman finished the half with 11 points after hitting five of her eight shot attempts.
Smith poured in a team-best 13 points on the day to go along with three steals. Overall, the Cowgirls got a balanced scoring attack as three other players reached double figures. Juniors Whitney Pegram, Brisa Silva and Destanie Sykes all scored 10 points apiece while the team shot 50 percent from the floor.
UNCW (3-2) answered OSU's spurt with a 13-2 run of its own over the next five minutes to take a 15-12 lead. However, the Cowgirls locked down the Seahawks over the final 12 minutes of the half, limiting them to just five points.
The UNCW drought enabled OSU to build a 30-20 lead heading into the break, giving the Cowgirls their first double-figure halftime lead of the season. For the game, the visitors were held to a 29 percent effort from the field, hitting just 16 of their 56 shot attempts.
After withstanding a 10-2 Seahawk run to start the second half, OSU reeled off 11 straight points to regain control of the game for good as they led by double figures for the final 12 minutes of action and built the margin to as many as 19 on two occasions.
The Cowgirls will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 2 p.m. in Stillwater.
