Cowgirl Basketball Falls in Double Overtime to Tulsa

OSU (1-4) had won three consecutive overtime games overall and had won its last four multi-overtime contests. The Cowgirls last loss in overtime came on Feb. 24, 2001 against Oklahoma, while its last double-overtime setback came on March 6, 1989 against Colorado.
The Golden Hurricane (4-1) led most of the first half before OSU took a one-point advantage on a layup by freshman Shaunte' Smith with 1:00 remaining. However, TU reclaimed the lead and took a 31-30 advantage into the break after Jamie Dreiling hit a jumper as time expired.
In the second half, OSU built a 44-40 lead on four consecutive points from junior Whitney Pegram, who finished with a game-high 32 points, and built the margin to seven points with seven minutes remaining before the Golden Hurricane got back into the contest.
With the two teams knotted at 58 apiece, freshman Shaunte' Smith stole the ball from Tandem Mays with five ticks remaining to give the Cowgirls a chance to close out the game in regulation. After a timeout, Pegram was unable to hit a turnaround jumper as time expired, sending OSU into its first overtime game since a 76-70 win over Colorado on Jan. 22, 2005 in Stillwater.
TU held a four-point advantage with 1:28 remaining in the first extra period before Pegram scored the final four points to force the second overtime.
In the final five minutes, Pegram and senior Catherria Turner each hit jumpers to put the Cowgirls in front, but OSU would be unable to score over the final 3:41, while the Golden Hurricane scored the final nine points of the game to wrap up the victory.
Smith finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for the Cowgirls, with Turner, who played the full 50 minutes, added 13 points and a team-best seven assists. Junior Destanie Sykes pulled a game-high 10 rebounds for OSU.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m.
