Cowboys Host Runnin' Rebels
Oklahoma State returns home to host the UNLV Runnin' Rebels on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7:07 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys are 4-1 after splitting a pair of games in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational. OSU defeated TCU 66-58 before falling to 10th-ranked Boston College 76-68 in the finals of the tournament. UNLV is 2-1 this season but coming off its first loss of the season, a 68-61 loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack.
On Television
Wednesday's game will be televised both in the state of Oklahoma and in the Las Vegas area. Cowboy Sports Network will provide the game in Oklahoma on stations across the state. SportsWest will provide the game in Las Vegas. The game can also been seen nationally as part of the ESPN FullCourt package.
Last Time Out
Oklahoma State took a 13 point lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game, but could not overcome a surge by the 10th-ranked team in the country and the Cowboys fell to Boston College 76-68 in the finals of the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational. Five different Pokes scored in double figures, led by David Monds' 15, but OSU made just 17 trips to the free-throw line, compared to 31 by the Eagles. Preseason Wooden Award candidate Jared Dudley had 24 points for BC while freshman Tyrese Rice added 21 off the bench, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.
Starting the Season off Right
Oklahoma State is 49-6 (.891) in the month of November under Coach Eddie Sutton, including a 33-2 (.943) mark in the last eight seasons. The lone loss prior to last weekend was to the College of Charleston at the 2002 Great Alaska Shootout. In fact, three of the six losses in November under Sutton have come at the Great Alaska Shootout. OSU lost twice in the 1994 event.
Balanced Attack
In just five games this season, Oklahoma State has had 20 double-figure scoring games. Yet, no player has scored more than 18 points in a single game. That's quite a balanced attack. On the perimeter, guard JamesOn Curry has had four double-figure scoring games, while Roderick Flemings and Byron Eaton have each had two. In the post, Mario Boggan and Torre Johnson have each had four double-figure scoring games, while David Monds has had three and Kenny Cooper has had one. OSU has five players averaging at least nine points per game.
About the Runnin' Rebels
UNLV is 2-1 this season having played all three games at home. The Rebels defeated Long Beach State and Hawaii, but fell to Nevada on Saturday night. UNLV is led by junior guard Michael Umeh who is averaging 16 points per game. Senior forward Louis Amundson is averaging 15.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest, while senior guard Ricky Morgan is chipping in 9.3 points per game. The Rebels are averaging 78.7 points per game as a team and shooting 45.9 percent from the floor. They scored 108 on Long Beach State, but were held under 70 points by both Hawaii and Nevada. UNLV is coached by former Kansas State Wildcat Lon Kruger who is in his second season at UNLV and his 20th year as a head coach at the collegiate level.
Series vs. UNLV
Oklahoma State is 5-1 all-time vs. the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, including a 1-0 mark inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. UNLV won the first meeting in the series 100-84 on Feb. 10, 1990. That was the year before Coach Eddie Sutton's return to Stillwater. Since then, OSU has defeated the Runnin' Rebels by an average of 13.2 points per game. The only other time UNLV has visited Gallagher-Iba Arena was on Jan. 18, 1997, when the Cowboys handed the Rebels a 73-54 loss. UNLV came to Oklahoma to play the Pokes on Dec. 2, 2000, but the game was played in Oklahoma City due to the renovation of Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State defeated UNLV 79-67 in last year's meeting in the Las Vegas Showdown.
Sutton Nearing Top Five
Coach Eddie Sutton has earned 785 victories as a Division I coach, placing him in sole possession of sixth place on the all-time career coaching victories list. He is just one win away from the all-time top-five list. Lefty Driesell, who ended his career at Georgia State, sits in fifth place with 786 career victories. Bob Knight of Texas Tech is the only active coach ahead of Sutton in career wins. In his 36-year head coaching career at the high school, junior college and Division I level, Coach Sutton has accumulated a record of 987-365, good for 73 percent winning percentage in 1,352 games.
