Cowgirl Basketball Travels To New Mexico for Holiday Tournament
November 23, 2005 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team will look to pick up its first win under head coach Kurt Budke this weekend when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to take part in the UNM Holiday Tournament. The Cowgirls (0-1) will be trying to rebound from last Saturday's 77-69 loss in their season opener against Texas State. OSU will meet Idaho in the first round at 6 p.m. (MST) on Friday before closing out play on Saturday evening against either Marist or New Mexico.
About The Field
Idaho enters the tournament having won its lone game of the season, picking up a 63-48 win over Portland on Nov. 18. The Vandals are led by senior Emily Faurholt. In just two seasons, the 5-11 center has scored more than 1,400 points in her career and entered her final campaign with a 24.3 points per game average. OSU and Idaho have never previously met. Marist heads to Albuquerque in search of its first win of the season. The Red Foxes opened the season with a 71-45 loss at Connecticut on Nov. 12 before suffering a 64-60 loss against Villanova on Nov. 18. OSU's possible matchup with Marist would be the first-ever contest between the two schools. New Mexico enters play at 3-1 and is fresh off a 76-68 win at Texas. The Lobos opened the season with victories over Oral Roberts and California before falling to Oklahoma in the Preseason WNIT. Last season, UNM finished 26-5 overall and captured both the Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Cowgirls and Lobos met on Nov. 23 of last year in Stillwater with New Mexico prevailing, 60-56. The meeting was the third all-time between the two schools and the Lobos now hold a 2-1 advantage in the series. UNM won the lone meeting between the two schools in Albuquerque, picking up a 65-44 win in 1997.
What 2 Watch 4
A win would be OSU's first away from home since a victory at Santa Clara on Dec. 18, 2003 ... Of its 11 non-conference games on the schedule this season, OSU will play only three away from Gallagher-Iba Arena with two of those being this weekend ... If the Cowgirls meet 25th-ranked New Mexico, it would give them a chance at their 20th win over a ranked opponent since the 1992-93 season.
