Cowgirl Basketball Drops Season Opener Against Texas State
November 22, 2005 | Cowgirl Basketball
The Bobcats (1-0) led much of the first half behind a 15-point effort from Joyce Ekworomadu. TSU converted on 48 percent of its field-goal attempts, including a 55-percent effort from beyond the three-point line to take a 42-34 lead into the half.
After the break, Ekworomadu hit a three to push the lead to double figures before the Cowgirls (0-1) began to tighten the margin.
A jumper by senior guard Catherria Turner at the 14:24 mark keyed a 7-0 OSU run to knot the score at 51 apiece.
The two teams exchanged the lead seven times over the next five minutes before TSU took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Erica Putnam with 2:54 remaining.
The Cowgirls took their final lead of the game with 3:41 remaining on a jumper by Whitney Pegram, who scored 17 of her team-high 21 points in the second half. However, the junior center picked up her fifth foul nearly 30 seconds later.
With Pegram out of the game, the Cowgirls struggled at the offensive end of the floor, scoring only three points the rest of the way.
In addition to Pegram, junior Destanie Sykes and and senior Catherria Turner finished in double figures in the scoring column with 11 and 13 points, respectively.
OSU will return to action next weekend when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. for the UNM Holiday Tournament.
