Cowboy Basketball signs Muonelo to National LOI
November 10, 2005 | Cowboy Basketball
Muonelo, at 6-5, 215 pounds, has been a starter for Edmond Santa Fe the past two seasons. He can play the point or shooting guard positions, as well as on the wing. The Wolves are ranked No. 1 in Class 6A in the preseason polls.
“I love their coaching, their style of play, and the crowds,” said Muonelo regarding Oklahoma State. “I just love the people there. You know they're great coaches, but you wouldn't even know it because they're such great people. Their tradition was a huge part of it. That probably was the biggest part of my decision.”
Muonelo, who led the Wolves to the Class 6A state title a year ago, averaged 18 points, 10.2 rebounds, three assists and 2.3 steals per game last season. Edmond Santa Fe finished with a 25-4 record last year, defeating top-ranked Putnam City and No. 2 Bartlesville en route to the state title. Muonelo was named the state tournament Most Valuable Player.
“Based on what I've seen, Obi will make an immediate impact on our team next season,” said assistant coach Jimmy Williams. “He is a playmaker. He can pass and shoot extremely well, and is an outstanding athlete. Obi has a tremendous feel for the game, and will make other players around him better. He impressed a lot of people during the summer circuit.”
Ranked as the nation's third-best shooting guard and No. 18 prospect overall by Rivals.com, Muonelo chose OSU over Kansas, Oklahoma, Illinois and Texas.
“After last year's guard haul, to add a player like Obi, one of the top-eight guards in the country, they'll have one of the top backcourts in the nation,” said Tim Watts of Rivals.com. “I think Obi is a McDonald's All-America type of player. He's a perfect fit to go with the players they signed last year.”
Muonelo joins Gary Flowers, a 6-8, 205 pound forward, as OSU's recruiting class for 2006.
