Cowboy Teammates to Face Off for Regional Championship
October 24, 2005 | Cowboy Tennis
“Both players have played super,” said head coach James Wadley. “They have both played really good tennis. We had four guys enter the tournament and two guys make it to the finals.”
Byrnes defeated 58th-ranked Adrians Zguns in the quarterfinals. The junior fell behind early, losing the first set 3-6, but battled back to win the final two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Byrnes then faced in-state rival Marek Velicka, Oklahoma, in the semifinals. Byrnes beat the 35th-ranked Velicka, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to advance to the finals.
“Daniel was the only unseeded player to reach the quarterfinals,” said Wadley. “He beat the two top-ranked players in our region to get to the finals. He is just now starting to get healthy and show what he can do.”
Bohunicky, ranked 49th, defeated Big 12 rival Adrian Szatmary of Nebraska in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-2. The senior then defeated Drake's Sergi Vila, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the finals.
“Tomas is playing steady tennis,” said Wadley. “Tomas has yet to lose a set in this tournament. He has been playing real well.
“These guys were our third and fifth guys last year,” Wadley added. “This is a real testament to them and how much they have improved.”
The finals will start Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the Tulsa campus. Regardless of the outcome tommorrow's match both players have already advanced to the 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 3-6, at Ohio State University by way of making the finals.
