Cowboy Tennis Sends Two to the Round of 16

Cowboy Tomas Bohunicky defeated Missouri State's Jeff Stone in the first round, 7-5, 6-0. The No. 49-ranked senior then beat instate rival Lee Gregg, Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the round of 16.
Junior Daniel Byrnes beat Missouri State's Jiri Spousta in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Byrnes then defeated UALR's Dinko Halachev, 6-3, 6-2 to also advance to the round of 16.
Two other Cowboys won their first round match but were eliminated in the second round. Juan Felipe-Diaz came back to beat Southern Illinois' Rodrigo Lama after losing the first set. The junior then took Arkansas' No. 58-ranked Adrians Zguns to three sets before being eliminated, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Arstem Burmistrau defeated Big 12 rival Karl Jones, Nebraska, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Burmistrau then lost a tight second round match to Drake's Dalibor Pavic, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (5).
Jason Wright also competed in the tournament but was defeated in the first round by Nebraska's Vincent Pietro, 6-3, 7-5. The sophomore then lost to Arkansas' No. 73-ranked Matt Roberts, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of consolations.
The Cowboys did fare as well in the doubles tournament. Bohunicky and Burmistrau were defeated by Oral Roberts' Cuan Farquharson and Tyrone Hill, 8-6. The No. 35-ranked duo of Byrnes and Diaz were also eliminated in the first round. They were defeated by Missouri State's John Kellert and Jiri Spousta, 9-8 (7)
Play will continue tomorrow at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the Tulsa campus.
