Cowgirls' Upset Bid Comes Up Short Against Baylor
January 29, 2005 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) _ Steffanie Blackmon hit two free throws with less than a second remaining, and No. 7 Baylor fended off Oklahoma State 67-65 on Saturday.
Blackmon was fouled under the basket with 0.9 seconds remaining and made both shots from the foul line. Oklahoma State's ensuing inbounds pass went out of bounds and Baylor ran out the final few ticks.
Emily Niemann scored 19 points, Sophia Young added 16 and Blackmon finished with 13 for Baylor (15-3, 5-2 Big 12), which appeared to be in control with a seven-point lead and 6{ minutes to play before Christian Hood sparked a comeback for the Cowgirls.
The 6-foot-5 center, making only her fourth start of the season, scored four straight points and blocked Blackmon's shot to set up Taleesha Conder's layup that tied the game at 61-all.
Chameka Scott scored underneath to give the Bears a 63-61 lead and Young stretched the lead to four with a right-hander in the lane.
Conder hit a jumper, then knocked the ball off Chelsea Whitaker in a scrum with 40 seconds left. Catherria Turner hit a driving layup to tie the game with 18 seconds left, and Baylor ran down the clock for a final shot before Blackmon was fouled.
Nina Stone finished with 20 points for the Cowgirls (6-11, 1-6), who haven't won back-to-back games in over a year.
