Texas A&M Slips Past Cowgirl Basketball, 49-44
January 13, 2005 | Cowgirl Basketball
The Cowgirls (5-8, 0-3) were once again plagued by a slow start, hitting just 19 percent from the floor and producing 17 points in the first half. The Aggies (10-3, 1-2) held a 25-17 advantage at the break despite hitting just 11-of-32, including two of their 14 three-pointers, from the field in the half.
OSU clawed its way back into the contest with a 14-5 run to open the second half and took its first lead of the game on a jumper by sophomore Devry McDonald at the 16:07 mark. The Cowgirls built the lead to six at 42-36 on a layup by senior Eliz Gomes before A&M battled back and regained the lead at 43-42 on A'Quonesia Franklin's third trey of the game with 3:35 remaining.
Despite missing two layups and turning the ball over three times down the stretch, the Cowgirls remained within striking distance. With 1:08 remaining, Nina Stone stole the ball and was fouled while converting two of her game-high 19 points, but could not hit the free throw to tie the score.
Stone finished with her first double-double of the season, adding 11 rebounds in 40 minutes, while sophomore Destanie Sykes grabbed a career-high 12 boards.
OSU will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns at 3 p.m.
