Cowgirl Golfers Fare Well In St. Rule Trophy Amateur Tournament
June 21, 2004 | Cowgirl Golf
Senior-to-be Annie Thurman, in Europe last week to compete for the United States in the Curtis Cup, finished tied for second, four strokes behind Louise Stahle, the individual champion of the St. Rule Trophy. The defending Big 12 individual champion, Thurman and Nikki Garret of Australia both carded a six-under-par 145 during the two-round tournament, played on both the New Course and Old Course of St. Andrews.
Karin Sjödin, a sophomore last season for OSU when she finished second at the NCAA Championships, finished tied for fifth with a four-under 147. Sjödin paired with individual champion Stahle as the pair won the team title for Sweden, three strokes better than Australia's 295.
The St. Rule Trophy began in 1984 and has included some of the top women's golf talent in the amateur ranks. In 1990, Anika Sorenstam won the title after defeating former Cowgirl Jennifer Allmark in the first hole of a playoff after both golfers finished the tournament with a one-over 288.
Both Thurman and Sjödin will compete in the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship, Tuesday through Saturday, June 22-26, at the Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian, Scotland.
