Cowgirl Golfers Advance To NCAA Championships

Oklahoma State's women's golf team advanced to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships, but it wasn't an easy task for the Cowgirls as they advanced from the East Regional.
OSU, which was in fifth place after two rounds here Friday afternoon, needed a one-hole playoff to defeat the Florida Gators and advance to the NCAA Championships. The top-eight teams and top-two individuals not on one of those teams advance from each regional.
The Cowgirls and Gators were tied after 54 holes for eighth place. In the one-hole playoff, the Florida Gators recorded a birdie, a par and three bogeys. Oklahoma State's golfers meanwhile, carded — Ashley Knoll, bogey; Candy Herrera, Karin Sjödin and Mallory Underwood, pars; and Annie Thurman, birdie — as the Cowgirls defeated the Gators by two strokes.
Individually, North Carolina's Meaghan Francella won medalist honors with a three-round total of 209, or seven under par. OSU sophomore Sjödin finished 12th for Oklahoma State with a three-round score of 223, while junior Thurman carded a one-over 73 during the final day and finished 20th.
This marks the fourth-consecutive season that the Cowgirl golf team has advanced to the NCAA Championships. The tournament will be held May 18-21, at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala.
