Cowgirls Fall in Tournament's First Round

The Cowgirls (7-16, 2-10) picked up the doubles point, but were unable to keep any momentum against the Cornhuskers (16-8, 6-6), dropping four of six singles positions.
“It was a tough loss today,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “I can't be too disappointed with the effort of our girls. We are obviously inexperienced, but played our hardest today.”
At the top slot, seniors Katya Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova defeated Leslie Harvey and Rose Ketmayura, 8-5.
Freshmen Lauren Simmons and Jennifer Poskitt locked up the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Anna Oehme and Milena Schulz-Gartner at the No. 3 position.
Even with the doubles point secured, the Cowgirls were unable to extend their season after falling in several closely contested singles bouts.
At the No. 1 position, Kolodynska claimed the first set, but fell to No. 107 Gitte Ostermann, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Karaskova claimed the second set in her match, but eventually fell to Schulz-Gartner at the second slot, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
After a dominant first set, Furtmayr could not hold off the charging Harvey, falling 0-6, 7-5, 6-4. Nebraska claimed the necessary points for victory when Pamela Castillejos defeated Poskitt at the No. 5 position 6-2, 7-6 in the days final match.
The Cowgirls picked up victories at the fourth and sixth positions by Masnic and Simmons, respectively, for the one point team loss.
“This match will give us more experience and confidence in the future,” Simmons said. “All of our freshmen and sophomores who played in the Big 12 Tournament this year will be able to believe in ourselves and that we can win coming into next year.”
The loss marked the first time since the 1999-00 season in which the Cowgirls were eliminated in the first round of the conference tournament, and only the second time since the inception of the Big 12.
“It was a tough loss,” Lubicz-Majewski said. ”This was the second 4-3 match that we've lost to Nebraska this year. It's always disappointing in those close matches because it can go either way.”
Nebraska will advance to take on second seed Texas A&M on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Courts.
