Cowboy Netters Cruise Past Colorado
April 03, 2004 | Cowboy Tennis
The Cowboys improved to 12-2 on the season and evened their conference mark at 1-1, while Colorado dropped to 5-13 and 1-4 in the Big 12.
OSU took the doubles' point with Yevgen Bondarchuk and Boris Kuharic winning at the No. 1 position and Tomas Bohunicky and Juan Felipe Diaz won at the No. 3 position.
The one negative of the day for the Pokes was the surprising upset of Mark Van Elden and Daniel Byrnes to Chad Tsuda and Mark Bundalo. Byrnes and Van Elden claimed an upset of their own over No. 28 Johan Brunstrom and Henrik Soderberg just days earlier.
Oklahoma State showed their dominance in singles winning five of the six matches in straight sets and only dropping a total of seven games in the first set. Colorado came back a little stronger in the second sets, but were not able to seriously get back into any of the matches except at the No. 4 position.
Kuharic lost the first game of the match to Marek Dvorak, and proceeded to win the next six games to take the first set 6-1. Kuharic's intensity dropped in the second set and Dvorak won the first four games of the second set before evening the match by winning 6-2. Kuharic seemed to regain control in the third set, and took a 5-3 lead. Dvorak came back with the next three games to take the lead in the match. Kuharic used his serve to even it up at six games a piece and force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker Kuharic won seven of the eight points to hold on to the victory.
Van Elden remained undefeated at the No. 1 position with an easy 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bundalo, while Tomas Bohunicky improved to 13-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Marcos Digliodo. Kuharic also improved to 13-1 with his win over Dvorak.
“I am tremendously happy winning a conference match 7-0,” head coach James Wadley said. “Mark (Van Elden) being undefeated at the No. 1 position is a tremendous accomplishment. I also appreciate the effort Yevgen (Bondarchuk) and Felipe (Diaz) performing as well as they did less than 100 percent.”
The Cowboys will travel to Nebraska on Apr. 7 to take on the Cornhuskers at 1:00 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb.
