Cowboy Tennis to Make First Television Appearance
April 19, 2004 | Cowboy Tennis
The match will be carried live by Cox Cable Channel 3 in Tulsa, Cox Cable Channel 7 in Oklahoma City and in Stillwater on channel 29. John Holcomb and Tulsa's women's tennis head coach Paige McMurray will provide the commentary.
“Our players are excited about playing on TV for the first time,” head coach James Wadley said. “If you cannot get excited about playing an inner state rival on television then there is something wrong with you. We would like to encourage all fans living in the area to come out and watch us play.”
The Cowboys are currently 15-3 with two road matches remaining on the schedule, the match with Tulsa and a trip to College Station to face Texas A&M.
Mark Van Elden has been OSU's top player all season, but has struggled of late, losing two of his last three matches. The rest of the lineup has answered the call as the Cowboys were able to defeat Oklahoma and Texas Tech in consecutive matches after losing to Baylor.
Daniel Byrnes and Juan Felipe Diaz both provided solid play at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Byrnes won both of his matches in straight sets, while Diaz needed a third set to defeat Oklahoma's Lee Gregg and handled Texas Tech's Dimitrio Martinez in straight sets.
Tulsa is currently 10-12 on the year and is led by 99th-ranked Dustin Taylor and No. 101 Alejandro Tejerina. Eleven of the Golden Hurricane's 12 losses have come against teams ranked in the top 30. Tulsa does have a big win against seventh-ranked TCU.
